Michael Dixon – M.L. “Sonny” Moss Artist of the Year

Michael Dixon is currently in his fifth year as the Assistant Director of Bands at College Station High School, where he has led the Concert and Symphonic Bands to annual sweepstakes awards and guided them to appearances at the State Marching Band Competition in both 2021 and 2023.

 

Before joining College Station High School, Mr. Dixon played a pivotal role in establishing band programs at Wellborn Middle School and Pecan Trail Intermediate. Over his 18-year career with College Station Independent School District (CSISD), he has also taught at A&M Consolidated Middle School, College Station Middle School, and spent time at Pecan Trail and Wellborn Middle Schools. Under his leadership, the Wellborn WarHawk Band achieved first division awards and a best-in-class designation in its inaugural year. His bands have consistently earned sweepstakes awards for the past 23 years.

 

In addition to his work with CSISD, Mr. Dixon has served as the applied horn instructor at Blinn College. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Education (BM Ed.) from West Texas A&M University in 2002 and his Master of Music (M.M.) from
Stephen F. Austin State University in 2012. During his studies, he had the opportunity to learn horn from Ron Lemon and conduct under the guidance of Dr. Gary Garner and Fred Allen.

 

Beyond teaching, Mr. Dixon is an active performer with the Bryan Theatre Company and frequently gigs around town during the holiday season. Prior to moving to the Brazos Valley, he served as an assistant horn with the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra for two years. His professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), the Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA), and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association (TMAA).

 

In his free time, Michael enjoys being an active member of Living Hope Baptist Church and traveling during the summer.
