Corby Maupin: New Horizons
Dates: June 17 – August 9, 2025
Location: The Arts Center Sue M. Lee Corridor
This exhibit consists of three paintings in a series, where the artist is exploring a style that combines spray-painting and stencil over an unrelated but complementary background. The first is a self-portrait, the second is a portrait of his sister over a silk-screened copy of Refractions, by Lee Kresner, and the third is a picture of his daughter. The next in chronological order is a collage entitled “Route Clearance” or “Syria”. The last piece is a master copy of a drawing by William Chadwick.

About the Artist
CORBY MAUPIN was born in Colorado, grew up across Washington, Arizona, and Missouri, inheriting a wanderlust that shaped his worldview. After high school, he spent three summers engaged in Christian humanitarian work in Africa and Southeast Asia, and India, experiences that deepened his appreciation for travel and diverse cultures. He later studied ancient and Biblical literature at Ozark Christian College, cultivating a reflective mindset that informs his art.
In 2010, at age 28, Corby joined the Army as a Combat Engineer, serving ten years, including three years in Germany and three combat deployments to Afghanistan and Syria. These experiences, marked by discipline and chaos, developed a love for operating in disorder. Stationed in Texas, first in the desert north of El Paso and then at Ft. Hood, Corby grew to love the state’s culture, vast landscapes, and vibrant communities.
In 2020, at the age of 38, Corby transitioned from military service to pursue a Construction Science degree at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. Inspired by the campus’s historic architecture, he began sketching as a way to process his wartime experiences. What started as a creative outlet blossomed into a passion for creating art, leading him to add a Studio Art minor. Drawing on classical techniques and a love for composition he is currently exploring different mediums and learning core skills. Corby’s work explores themes of beauty, ugliness, fear, and human connection, often reflecting his global travels and military background. His meticulous approach, influenced by studying Renaissance artists, brings depth to his realistic style.
Corby is honored to have his work featured by The Arts Center. His art continues to evolve, blending technical precision with emotional resonance, as he seeks to capture and express the beauty and intensity of the human experience. Follow Corby on Instagram

Artist Statement
I have been an art lover for most of my life. My mother was an artist, and I was exposed to the masters at a young age. As an adult, I have been fortunate enough to travel the world and have always enjoyed seeing different architectural styles. I have also had the privilege of visiting some of the world’s great museums. Despite this, I had never tried to create art myself.
After leaving the Army, I came to Texas A&M. One day, I decided to learn to draw and began sketching interesting structures on campus. I fell in love with drawing and, within a few weeks, applied for admittance to the Visual Arts Department to pursue a Minor in Studio Art. I haven’t looked back; in fact, I love it more with each passing semester.
I have not yet developed my own style. I am focused on learning core skills and exploring different mediums. I am looking forward to learning how to oil paint next semester. However, I am enjoying the process of learning and love using the elements of design in various styles and mediums. These works are some of my best yet. I like them, I enjoyed creating them, and I hope you enjoy them as well. Thank you.
