About the Artist

DAVID SITES Originally from York, Pennsylvania, David graduated from the York Academy of the Arts in 1978 before finding work in the outdoor advertising industry as a traveling billboard pictorial artist. As a billboard artist, David would hand paint ‘canvases’ 14 feet by 48 feet in size, massive projects that would often take three or more full days to complete. Each final product was a feat of technical skill as he created hyper-realistic images and text that left nothing to interpretation.

Artist Statement

“My painting process begins with several colorful brush strokes from my limited palette of five colors using oil-based enamel paint. Working loosely, I add random splashes of color onto the surface of the painting, allowing the paints to flow and blend together. At this point, the piece appears almost abstract, I then rely on my imagination and intuition to add or subtract elements to help guide the piece to completion. My painting process therefore creates a ‘Suggestion of a Landscape.’”

My travels as a billboard pictorial artist allowed me to observe the ever changing landscape. The way the colors of a landscape would vary from sunrise to sunset. Fleeting clouds would cast the land in cool shadow. Clouds would sometimes group together and settle in a valley or skim a mountaintop. All of these different atmospheres create direct emotional powers of their own.”
