
Velinda Corbell | STAR Volunteer of the Year
Velinda was born in the small east Texas town of Jasper and grew up there. She grew up surrounded by the Piney Woods and three lakes that provided many hours of outdoor experiences.
Velinda attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a degree in Educational Curriculum and Instruction. Being an Aggie is one of the great thrills of her life!
She taught mainly in public schools, but also spent several years at a christian school, for a total of thirty five years. The first few years were teaching Kindergarten, second, and third grades, as well as elementary music.
The most meaningful remaining years were spend teaching special education students, maining special needs life skills, Pre-K through age 22. She loved volunteering with Special Olympics and seeing the joy in their faces!She also volunteered with the junior high and high school band.
Velinda is now a docent at the George HW Bush Presidential Library and Museum. She loves to follow in the footsteps of President Bush and lead a life of service. She is also a volunteer and STAR at The Arts Center of Brazos Valley. She loves to see the beauty in all types of art and learning new methods of expression.
Velinda has served at church on committees, kitchen crew, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and where needed. Serving Jesus holds the most special place in her heart.
Along the way, she had three children who now live in three different states. One is a writer/ editor, another is a law enforcement officer, and the youngest has worked with special needs adults.
Velinda’s favorite hobbies include traveling, reading, walking, studying history, Aggie sports, and spending time with her Labradoodle MoonPie.
