Hope Stone Dance: horse latitudes

Hope Stone Dance premieres horse latitudes, an evening integrating live performance and film. Filmed at two ranches and in Downtown Houston, the footage combines stables, indoor riding rings, open fields and vacant downtown streets, focusing on healing through equine therapy. The work centers around the dance of the horse and the dancers, their breath, gait, and the heartbeat of both. From equine therapist Nancy Jarrell – “The interaction between horse and client often unlocks blocked emotions, allowing them to be processed and healed. … It is as though the horse already knows the history.”

Horse latitudes are the regions 30 degrees north and south of the Equator, high pressure areas of calm winds. The legend around the phrase comes from ships sailing to the New World that would stall for weeks where crews, unable to sail, would throw horses they were transporting overboard to conserve water. Horse latitudes looks at the question of healing over so much time.
