REFLECTIONS OF A SPECIAL OLYPICS ATHLETE PROGRAM

Born from the vision of two Arts Council Board Members: Sue Lee and Penelope Kosztolnyik, Reflections of a Special Olympics Athlete encourages Special Olympics athletes and special needs artists to express artistically how they feel about their sports. Sue and Penelope wished to provide artistic opportunities for Special Olympics athletes and special needs artists of all ages from the Brazos Valley.

Reflections began in 2006 as a one-day exhibition with about 30 artists. Through the generous support of the Nina Heard Astin Trust, Nina Astin Winkler Trust and the dedication of many artists and volunteers it grew to 54 artists in 2008! For 2010, we are proud to say it has grown into one of the most successful programs of the ACBV – showcasing 68 artists in a month-long Texas Gallery exhibit during May. We are so pleased that this program has been well received and supported by the Brazos Valley community.

The artists featured in the 2010 exhibit are members of the Brazos Valley Bombers club and special needs students from surrounding area schools. We know you will enjoy their works!

These are indeed amazing works of art – art we want to share beyond the Texas Gallery. These artworks will be on display for the public through August at the Brazos Valley Council of Governments as part of our Community Gallery-at-Large© Program. This commemorative catalog allows everyone to take some of this art home!

Please take a moment to view some of the photos and a video from the May 6, 2010 reception to honor participants. We hope that you will stop by to see the art first-hand - making the arts a part of your life and theirs!
